Fire damper test record template, what to record for every damper

A free template for the record of each fire damper test. Use it on site, print it, or see how the same record is built on the engineer's phone.

The template

Fire damper test record template: the fields to fill in

  1. Site, date and engineer. Client, site address, the date of the test and the engineer who carried it out.
  2. Damper reference. The damper's reference from the register, with building, floor and room. A damper that is not on the register is added before it is tested.
  3. Type and release. The damper type, and whether it closes on a fusible link or an actuator.
  4. Access. Whether the access panel was found and opened, and whether the damper could be seen. No access is recorded as a finding.
  5. Condition before the test. Blade or curtain free of debris and not propped or wired open; the fixing and the fire-stopping around it visibly intact.
  6. The test. Whether the damper was released and closed fully, and whether it was reset and left open as found.
  7. Result. Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory for that damper, with the reason for any failure and the action needed.
  8. Photos. Before and after photos, kept against the damper's own entry.
  9. Next test due. The date this damper is next due. BS 9999 asks for a test at least annually.

Why it matters

Why a fire damper test record matters

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, Article 17, asks for fire safety equipment - fire dampers among it - to be kept in efficient working order. BS 9999 asks for a test on completion and then at least annually. The test record is how a firm shows that each damper was tested, what was found and when it is next due. A damper recorded as Unsatisfactory needs a retest once it has been put right.

On the phone

The same test record on the engineer's phone

In SMART Reports the engineer opens the site, sees every damper from the imported register and records each test with photos against its own entry. Every damper keeps its own due date, and a failed damper gets a retest that moves only the dampers retested - not the whole site. The office sends the certificate (Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory), the test report and a location plan with damper dots. Fire damper testing software is £90 a month, every engineer and office user included, no VAT charged.

FAQ

Fire damper test records: questions firms ask

What should a fire damper test record show?

The damper's register reference and location, its type and release, access, its condition, whether it closed and was reset, the result, photos, and the date it is next due.

How often should fire dampers be tested?

BS 9999 asks for a test when the damper is installed, then at least annually. Inspections in between help catch problems early.

Can I use this template for free?

Yes. Print it or save it as a PDF from your browser. It names no standard as met - it is a list of what to record.

Is there an app that keeps fire damper test records?

Yes. In SMART Reports the engineer records each damper's test on the phone, with photos, against its own register entry, and the office sends the certificate and the test report.

Is this the same as a fire damper test report?

Not quite. The test record is what the engineer fills in for each damper on site. The fire damper test report is what the client receives: every damper's result, with the certificate (Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory) and a location plan. This template covers the record, and the PDF version prints as a blank test record for up to 26 dampers.
